About the Artist…

Arturo Pérez pictorial work is a celebration of nature, the figure and life. His work reflects the innate quest of exploiting more than dualities: the “micro” world and the “macro” world  at the same time and fusing them together with complexities of sentiment, movement, dance and music. Using vivid color, light and surface texture as a form of expression.  BA & BS, University of New Orleans. MFA, Pratt Institute. Arturo is a contemporary Puerto Rican-Lebanese artist, who has called New Orleans home since 1984.

In his decades-spanning practice, Arturo has explored belonging and identity through different materials, mediums and forms. Self taught in dance at a very young ate, in his teens began his formal dance education, which lead to a formal art and science education culminating with a Masters Fine Arts from Pratt Institute, NYC.

His paintings are highly personal. His use of bold color, the figure, the silhouette, physical layering of time, space, place, light, movement, mark making, mediums, and history evoke an emotion. Working in a large scale, Arturo draws from nature, music, dance, and the figure for connection. From loss, exclusion, prejudice, and ignorance (the unseen), he creates works of art transferring its energy into gestural sweeps of paint through layering of semi-opaque or translucent oil paint and condensing seemingly infinite abstract narratives, with multiple stories into a single unified composition (the seen).

Arturo’s installation pieces question established norms as he draws from the book of ideas to inspire a dialogue.

Arturo’s functional objects are made from 100% discarded materials, diverting landfill waste and transforming them into unique, aesthetically pleasing and functional furniture.
